As you may know, there are different requirements necessary to drive different types of vehicles. For example, a normal car that you'd typically drive for your personal use requires a Class D license. Class D is the most common type of license for most drivers, as it covers regular day-to-day driving. However, when it comes to motorcycle driving, you'll want a Class M license. A Class M license indicates that you've taken the proper courses for motorcycle safety, and been licensed by the proper governing body. The benefit of choosing a Class M for your motorcycle license is that it covers all motor-driven vehicles in the state of Illinois, whether that's a motorcycle, moped, or dirt bike! 

Yes! Drivers can apply for their motorcycle license starting at age 16, just like driving a car. As long as you take all the necessary steps, you can achieve your driver's license in just a few short weeks! The only difference to note for drivers under the age of 18 is that minors are required to take a non-optional motorcycle safety class in order to obtain their license. A class is strongly recommended for all drivers, but it is technically optional for drivers over 18. The good news is, there are many free motorcycle safety classes available, so you can learn all the best safety tips without breaking the bank. 

First off, you'll want to decide which type of license you're going for. As we mentioned above, Class M is ideal because it covers all motorcycles with 150cc or greater displacement. However, you can also go for a Class L, which covers any motor-driven cycle with less than 150cc displacement. From there, take a motorcycle course and obtain your IDOT Motorcycle Rider Course Student Completion Card. This is necessary for drivers under 18, and optional for drivers over 18. Either way, you must still complete the written and driving exam. If you're a first-time applicant with no other license, then you'll also need to complete a vision exam.
