How to Get a Motorcycle License in Indiana
Just a Few Simple Steps and You Can Be on the Road!
If you are considering entering the wonderful world of motorcycle ownership, there is a key step
you must take before you can ride legally; a motorcycle license, of course! You may be wondering how
to go about obtaining a license, so you can get your adventure started with one of the latest and
greatest options here at Lake City Cycle. In Indiana, the process of getting a motorcycle license
could be a little different than what you may be used to in other states. That's why we are taking
the time to explain the process to you so you can be better prepared when you are ready to make this
big decision. Nothing is more important at Lake City Cycle than giving our customers the information
they need to make their lives that much easier. To learn how you get a motorcycle license, we invite
you to read below!
Indiana Motorcycle Learner's Permit
The first major aspect of getting a motorcycle license is to get a learner's permit. A
motorcycle learner's permit allows Indiana residents who hold a valid Indiana driver's license
to practice riding a motorcycle before applying for a motorcycle endorsement. In order to
accomplish this task, you must hold a valid Indiana driver's license and pass a knowledge test
based on the Indiana Motorcycle Operator's Manual. If you are less than 18 years of age you also
must have a parent or guardian sign an Agreement of Financial Liability. Once you have your
motorcycle permit, now is the time to practice your skills! Just remember to follow the permit
laws:
- You must wear a United States DOT-approved helmet
- You may only ride between a 1/2 hour before sunrise - a 1/2 hour after sunset
- You may not carry passengers
- Permit is valid for one year
Practice Your Motorcycle Skills
While we mentioned this step already, it's worth reiterating how vital it is that you practice
your driving on a motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle is much different than driving a vehicle.
Because you are completely exposed, you must take extra precautions and heighten your level of
awareness. As a motorcyclist you need to take extra steps to be a safe and diligent driver,
especially since it's really easy to end up in someone's blind spot. The more time you spend
practicing, the more confident and safe of a motorcycle driver you can become.
Take a Ride Safe Indiana Safety Course
When you take a safety course required for all motorcycle licenses, you will prove your
essential riding skills through a written and riding test. The Ride Safe Indiana organization
offers courses for beginning and advanced motorcyclists. Five hours of classroom instruction
prepares you for 10 hours of practical riding exercises in a controlled, off-street environment.
The course concludes with a knowledge and skills evaluation. Motorcycles are provided free of
charge to use during the training. Once you pass all required tests, the results are
electronically submitted to the BMV.
Get Your Indiana Motorcycle Endorsement
Getting your Indiana Motorcycle Endorsement is easy and takes just a few simple steps. Indiana
residents who are at least 16 years and 90 days old and hold a valid Indiana driver's license
must:
- Successfully complete a Safety Course with an authorized Ride Safe Indiana provider
- Bring graduation documentation when you visit a BMV Branch to receive your motorcycle endorsementÂ
- You may also be required to pass a standard vision screening exam.Â
- If less than 18 years old you must have a parent or guardian sign an Agreement of Financial Liability.Â
- New Indiana residents who hold a valid motorcycle license from another state can transfer the endorsement to their Indiana driver's license after passing a motorcycle knowledge exam.
